Many
of the calls TVCRC receives are from people in financial trouble, unable
to pay utility bills and/or rent. Some have been referred to TVCRC by other
agencies that they have contacted, but who cannot help them. A large
percentage are single parents with no education, no job and no transportation
and in very desperate situations.
The
caller is often in tears and without hope that anyone cares or that
help is available.. The caller is greeted by a trained volunteer who asks
them to explain their situation. The volunteer then explains how
TVCRC may be able to help, tells them it will be necessary to ask a lot
of questions and assures them of confidentiality.
Though
it is not a requirement to receive information about available resources,
the client is asked to provide a name, address and telephone number, information
pertinent to their problem - ie: landlord's name and number. They
are asked what type of support they are currently receiving - ie: H&W,
WIC, energy assistance, child care, whether they have family, friends or
a church that can help.
After
all this information has been gathered, the client is referred to all social
services for which they qualify. They are provided with phone number and
name of a contact person and also informed about special requirements or
documents they might need. With 3-way calling, the volunteer can
place the call for them and stay on the line to make sure they reach someone
who can help.
All
TVCRC volunteers have community contacts that can be tapped when needed.
The volunteers may phone personal contacts for special assistance when
the situation seems to warrant it, while still respecting the client's
right to privacy.

TVCRC
provides a telephone contact service to clients in Southwest Idaho .
This service is accomplished by trained volunteers who are available 8
AM to 5 PM five days a week. The volunteers work with each
client to determine both immediate and long-term needs and provide referrals
to agencies/programs that can enable the client to take charge of their
own destiny. TVCRC volunteers are trained to guide clients to the
appropriate combination of resources ie: information, referrals, case management
and advocacy.
